Miles from the Mainstream
D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
Memo To New York Governor
George E. Pataki

JANUARY 23, 2005 --

Please forgive me for losing the yellow summons I got for not having on my seatbelt as I made a right turn in Manhattan from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. to 1110th Street.

(By the way, this thoroughfare was once called Seventh Avenue north of Central Park. How come it isn't Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. below the park -- where it remains Seventh Avenue?)

Here is the problem: the ticket had to be answered in 15 days and DMV told me that I had to wait until Albany processed it until I can clear up the matter of the lost ticket.

But that will be well after the time to answer expired. Can you keep me from getting into trouble with DMV ?

Of course, if Albany did not have to process the ticket, maybe I could have gotten quicker response in New York City, but then, without Albany getting involved, there would not be need for the $50 surcharge on top of the $40 fine I guess.

With surcharges like that, perhaps you can keep from raising taxes.

PS: My car has airbags. Why do I have to keep on my seastbelt while driving 10 miles per hour in NYC?

Oh, right -- to give the state that $50 surcharge if I just rely on the airbag.
