President Grant's Birthday …
April 27 marks the 184th anniversary of the birth of President Ulysses S. Grant.
The annual commemoration at Grant's Tomb, on Riverside Drive in Manhattan, will
begin at 11 a.m. President Grant was a graduate of the United States Military
Academy and the ceremony usually includes a general presently assigned to West
Point and a cadet honor guard. Floral wreaths include one from the President.

No More Assumptions …
I guess we no longer should assume
That a wedding ring means the mate is a groom
In these times "the man of the house"
Might well be instead, a same-sex spouse

Just another initial coincidence -- Let's Promote Rationalism …
Here LPR stands for Lonely Pamphleteer Review
But LPR stands for other things too
Having recently learned -- and will not be hesitant.
Among other things it stands for legal permanent resident
Please be assured, here I do not kid you
This LPR is not code on the immigration issue

LPR Clicksters,
Mark Your Calendars …
The Connecticut Agricultural Fair, in Goshen, CT, will be held
on the weekend of July 28 to 30. LPR has learned that folk music legend
Richie Havens will be the July 29 headliner.
(Fair entertainment director is Terri Fassio, the best web-person in the country
-- and LPR's web-master. Fair president is Todd Gelineau, graphics
designer extraordinary -- and creator of the LPR logos.)
For more information on this annual--and wonderful -- expression of Americana,
please see the fair's website, on the LPR link-list.

Mea Gas Gulpa
On our economic wounds the Times pours salt
Declaring it is all our fault
That gas prices again are so high
Never consider this greed is planned
Say the problem is one of demand
Don't look as the economy gets swatted like a fly
Note: The
New York Times article, first page business section, April 8
blames "high demand" from motorists for the
current spike in gas prices.

Customs of the Season …
Spring brings not only April showers and colorful flowers.
It also brings the tradition of "spring cleaning." It
is not clear why we don't have, instead, "fall cleaning" --
to remove the detritus of summer and
prepare for winter.
Whether the spring-cleaning tradition began with the springtime exodus of the
children of Israel from Egypt -- resulting in the Passover holiday, LPR cannot
say, noting only that house-cleaning is a pre-Passover tradition. Nor will
LPR speculate that had the exodus occurred in the summer, the custom would
be summer-cleaning.

A Glass Mural …
LPR here posts another photo of the glass office building

to artists, an unfair labor practice?)

"24"-iana …
LPR has found a report of a "24" marathon in an August 20, 2002 entry
at www.everything2.com -- but with
commercial breaks deleted, 24 became 18.
A real-time " 24" marathon would show "24" in 24. LPR expects
that 24 marathons (of 18 or 24 hours of continuous viewing) are not unusual on,
say, college campuses. (And if not, why not?)
LPR wonders when the first "24"
festival will be held. Or has it been?
People are apparently wondering if Jack Bauer ever sleeps, among other things,
during his 24 hour day.
See, for example, www.ethicsscoreboard.com --
which
also comments (May 11, 2005) that the popularity of " 24" suggests
the country's acceptance of torture.
